The Construction Journey and Challenges

After years of socialization and negotiations, the first stone for the monument was finally placed on June 8, 1997, by President Soeharto. Construction officially started, but the process quickly faced major obstacles when Indonesia experienced the severe monetary crisis in 1998.
The economic crisis forced the development of Garuda Wisnu Kencana to stop completely for many years. During this period, visitors could only see unfinished statue sections such as the half-body of Lord Vishnu and the Garuda head displayed separately inside the cultural park area.
Completion of the Monument
The project finally regained momentum in 2013 after PT Alam Sutera Realty Tbk took over the development process. Under the new management, statue components created in Bandung were transported to Bali and carefully assembled piece by piece until the monument slowly took its final shape.
After nearly 28 years of development, Garuda Wisnu Kencana was officially completed on July 31, 2018. President Joko Widodo later inaugurated the monument on September 22, 2018. Standing at approximately 121 meters tall and weighing around 4,000 tons, the statue became taller than the Statue of Liberty in the United States.
